Why do I seem to end up here so often?
Oh right, I’m developing a car purchasing habit.
AMA while I’m bored in line.

So how does it drive? Have you wrung it out a bit? Is there a lot of lag or does the boost hit early? Does it taper off near the top? Cornering?
If you could do one *crazy* mod, what would it be?

How do they do the testing? OBD or pipe?
We got rid of our testing a long time ago. I only ever had to test the D100

If you have OBD-II, they just plug in and make sure nothing looks bad. Pre OBD-II vehicles get the tailpipe sniffer. Everything back to... 1975 (I think) gets tested, and that cutoff is fixed, not rolling.
This is only for Portland and Medford metro areas. Nowhere else in Oregon requires emissions testing.

Move across the river! Washington is ending emissions testing in 2020 which means that everybody can license all of their cars at their actual houses and not in counties that didn’t require it.

I thought they were phasing emissions testing out here in WA... You may want to embrace a mailing address outside the “city” parts of the state. Lower registration costs and no emissions testing... I haven’t tested any of my cars since moving here.

emissions...oo that reminds me... where’d his stigness go?

As much as all the crap the current Ontario government is doing with the province right now... I’m just glad they got rid of emissions testing completely.

It drives way nicer than anything I’m used to! But, you know, I’m used to a Corolla, a 25-year-old half ton pickup, a gen 1 Prius, and a Town & Country minivan.
I had some fun with on-ramps on the drive down, but haven’t really put it through its paces. The turbo engages pretty low in the rev range; once you’re around 2-2.5k there’s very little lag. I haven’t gone very far up the rev range (I think I took it up to the rev limiter once and I wasn’t paying attention to the power curve).
The suspension is a lot stiffer than I’m used to, so there’s almost no body roll when taking curves 10-15mph higher than the posted speed, but I haven’t gone on any twisters yet, so I don’t really know, and also I’m not at all experienced in this area. I f I don’t get a dog by this weekend, I may go hit some nearby twisties in the coastal range with my friend in his WRX.

I never had to do that for any of my cars. Somehow my GTO passed everything in VA when I bought it from the dealer.

I just use the self-service station which can’t tell if I’m hooking up to a car or a simulator.

If I remem ber correctly there’s a number of DIY centers in the Portland area, pretty much no one uses them because *gasp* you have to plug the business end of the tester into your OBD port all by yourself .
Related note, there’s no testing whatso e ver in Washington state, just sayin’ :)

Oh, as for *crazy* mod... unfortunately I don’t think a VW VR6 would fit in the engine bay. So... probably completely new sound system. Either it would be added alongside the stock head unit (since it also shows all the auto climate control settings), or use a double-din that I could program to show those settings, either way with micro controllers running custom firmware to translate between steering wheel audio controls and/or center stack controls and the new system.

Wait what? I friggin’ do that for fun. I had no idea that was an option. Do you know what any of them are called?

Honestly, setting that up sounds like more work than doing the testing.

Hmm, I’m in Kind county and currently need t o get my V70 to pass emissions and I had to have my 850 and Miata do the same.

No.. I moved to Seattle four years ago. I’m pretty sure t here was one off 26, near the Home Depot Hillsboro).

I had to get my Cayman tested, but no more as WA isn’t bothering with testing. This change took place very recently, you may want to check for yourself to be 100% (King County sucks, but you knew that ).
![]() 03/12/2019 at 16:44 |

True. But if you keep buying heaps, it could pay off. I just switch registration and wait for plates, there aren’t any extra steps...

I live in Bothell but also bought a property in Gold Bar a few months ago, I’ll register my cars wherever they’re cheapest and has the least government mandates.

Quebec never did testing, I thought Ontario was the same. I learned me something

I can all-but guarantee the Gold Bar address will save you a substantial amount of money on car registration/taxes. It’s in Snohomish County (which saves you some), outside the area considered urban (no emissions testing, lower taxes), etc.
Mind you, emissions tests are going away entirely in all of WA starting in 2020.
![]() 03/12/2019 at 16:58 |

You won’t need to do that after the end of this year. I used to get this benefit (no testing, just pay the fees to change registration and sales taxes) from living in Kitsap County and now in the boonies of King County. Only the urban areas are forced to get testing done. I’m just beyond the boundary for that... Not that any car I have ever owned has ever been un able to easily pass testing .

Man. If only this all started one year earlier . I need to get my new Volvo registered, but can’t until it passes emissions. Which means.... I have to get it running first...

Yeah, I’ll check out both before renewing my tabs. I’m in unincorporated Bothell, outside the insane Sound Transit 3 levies.

People will still do that to avoid taxes, though.
My annual taxes on my car is $60-something, while anyone a couple miles west of me with the same car pays $900-something.

He was clearly on edge, and I don’t think the pile-on helped, regardless of whether it was well-intentioned. During his previous hiatus he’d still stop by Fur Face Friday, but didn’t see him last week.
![]() 03/12/2019 at 17:05 |

Ahh, in that case you’ll probably only save a bit. King has some extra tax on cars, but it’s not substantial. I think in one of my groups we found that it was only $5-6 more per car in King than Snohomish.

Got a lot of pushback from the community, but my sound system installation in the Miata was one of my favorite things I’ve ever done to a car. Felt like a “big” project, but I also didn’t have to worry about screwing something up and not being able to drive.
I bet your wagon is going to be a ton of fun in the twisties. It's crazy how flat they corner, just not something you would expect!

oh i know hes still posting.... i checked :p
just not here.. and thats a shame
but thats his call to make
still... wish him all the best and hope he comes back someday

Man, really? I am a big fan of your sound system project , since I love listening to music when I drive and it seems like everyone else just gives up on having that in an open-top Miata (or uses headphones). And I know what you mean; the freedom to mess up without severe consequences is such a great feeling in any project (big reason why I got that truck).

I have friends that live within the RTA zone, the tabs are unbelievably high. Chevy SS $650, Tesla Model S $1100, etc.. I pay $65/car in Bothell

They end next year, IIRC.

Yeah, primary daily is and will continue to be motorcycles. Hard to pass up a one time $100 registration and no DEQ.

Yeah, I looked it up and it starts in 2020...
I guess they still have us on the hook until then if we live somewhere that requires it.

Easy solution: have cars too new or too old to need it.

After I bought the Volvo, I filled it up with regular gas for the way down because it was gonna be an I-5 snoozefest. I’ve finally emptied that tank in the past few days, and I needed a little stress reliever so after work today I filled it up with 92 and took it out around town for a few lower-speed twisties in the rain. Because it was rainy, and there were a few cars nearby, I kept it tame, though I did have a little understeer moment that I (and the car, mostly the car) quickly recovered from.
After I exited the twisties and snaked through the neighborhood to the nearest highway on ramp, I had a straight shot to speed up and merge over so I let loos e — and man, does the premium make a difference on the top-end power curve! Before it would peter out around when it got in the high 5k revs , now with the 92 in there it keeps on pushing past 6k, seemingly all the way to the rev limiter near 7 ! I only had the opportunity to do this once because I immediately hit traffic, but I’m looking forward to trying it again.

That’s the spirit! These wagons really do MOVE.
I’ll just be over here, waiting to hear that you’ve ordered a bigger turbo lol

Yeah... I wonder. I do like the curves more than the straightaways , and I don’t feel a need for more power in the curves . That said, a stage 1 tune I can easily see myself doing.
